GotPhoto download links work for up to 6 weeks after you order. If yours has expired, you don't need to buy the photos again. You can usually get a new link yourself:
- Open your order from your order confirmation email.
- Click Zip file download.
- Check your email. GotPhoto sends you a fresh link shortly after.
If that doesn't work, ask the photography studio that sold you the photos. They can renew the link from their side in a few clicks. Below are the details for each step, what to do if you can't find your order, and a message you can copy and send to your studio.
Why your download link stopped working
When you buy digital photos through a GotPhoto shop, you get a download link by email. That link has a time limit: up to 6 weeks from the order date. Picture day orders tend to land in a busy part of the school year. It's easy to open the email, plan to download later, and come back too late.
It also helps to know that GotPhoto gives you two different ways in, and they don't expire at the same time:
| Gallery access | Download link | |
|---|---|---|
| What it's for | Browsing proofs and placing an order | Getting the digital files you bought |
| How you get it | An access code from the school or studio, or a login | An email after your order is ready |
| What you see | Watermarked preview photos | Your purchased files, usually as a zip file |
| When it stops working | When the studio closes the gallery | Up to 6 weeks after you order |
So if the gallery still opens but your files won't download, it's the download link that expired, not your purchase.
How to renew the link yourself
- Open your order. The quickest way is the link in your order confirmation email. Or go to your studio's GotPhoto shop and choose Customer Login. Sign in with the email and password from your registration email, then open My Account.
- Find the order with your digital photos and open it. GotPhoto calls this page the order overview.
- Click Zip file download. This tells GotPhoto to issue a fresh link.
- Check your email. An automatic message with the renewed link should arrive shortly. If it doesn't, look in your spam or promotions folder. Also make sure you're checking the email address you used to order.
- Download right away. GotPhoto doesn't publish whether a renewed link gets another full 6 weeks, so don't wait to find out.
The download usually comes as a single zip file. On a computer, double-click it to open the folder of photos. On a phone, you may need to open it in your Files app, so a computer is the easier choice if you bought several photos.
Can't get into your order?
If you can't reach the order overview page, work through these in order:
- Can't find the confirmation email? Search your inbox for the studio's name and for "GotPhoto." The email may come from the studio's name rather than from GotPhoto.
- Never made an account, or forgot your login? Contact the studio. They can look up your order with your name and email.
- Only have an access code? The code opens the album for browsing ("Open Album"). If you can't reach your order from there, ask the studio to look it up.
- Lost the access code too? The studio can help. Many ask for your child's name, grade, and school to find the right gallery.
Every studio's GotPhoto shop has its own FAQ page and contact details, usually at an address like studioname.gotphoto.com/page/faq. That's the place to look for the studio's email, phone number, and hours, as well as its rules on delivery times and printing.
Ask your photographer to renew it
If the button didn't work, your photographer can reset the link from their side. In GotPhoto's system they disable the old link from the order's Actions menu, then click Renew download link. It takes them a minute, but they need to know which order is yours. Copy this message and fill in the brackets:
Subject: Expired download link for order [order number]
Hi [studio name],
I bought digital photos from your GotPhoto shop, and the download link expired before I could save them. Could you please renew the download link for my order?
- Order number: [from your confirmation email, if you have it]
- Order date: [approximate is fine]
- Email used for the order: [email]
- Name on the order: [your name]
- Student or team: [child's name, grade, school or team]
Thank you!
Sending it from the same email address you used to order makes it easier for the studio to find you.
Save copies before the link expires again
Once you have a working link, save the photos the same day and keep a backup:
- Download the zip file to a computer and open it.
- Rename the photos with your child's name and the school year, like
noah-grade5-spring-2026.jpg. - Keep one copy on your computer or an external drive and one in a cloud photo library.
- Save the order confirmation email in a folder with the photos, in case you need to contact the studio again.

Why the gallery photos have a watermark
The photos you browse in a GotPhoto gallery are previews, and studios watermark them so families can choose before buying. The digital files you paid for are delivered separately through your download link. That's why a copy saved from the gallery page will still show the watermark, while the file from your download link is the one you bought. If you're comparing GotPhoto with other school photo services, our guide to PhotoDay digital downloads shows how a different platform handles the same steps.
Already have the rights to a watermarked copy?
The renewed download is always the best version, so start there. Sometimes the studio has closed and the only copy left is watermarked. If you own that photo or have the photographer's permission to edit it, our GotPhoto watermark remover can clean it up. For other picture day companies, see the school photo watermark remover and our guide to school photos you've already paid for.
FAQ
How long does a GotPhoto download link last?
According to GotPhoto, download links for digital products stay active for up to 6 weeks from when the order was placed. The exact window can be shorter, so download your photos as soon as the email arrives instead of waiting.
Do I have to pay again to get a new link?
No. You're asking for a new link to photos you already bought, not placing a new order. Click Zip file download on your order page to get a renewed link by email, or ask the studio to renew it for you.
Why didn't the renewal email arrive?
Check spam and promotions folders, and make sure you're looking in the inbox for the email address on the order. If nothing arrives after a few hours, contact the studio and ask them to renew the link from their order page.
Should I contact GotPhoto or my photographer?
Start with your photographer. The studio runs the GotPhoto shop, can see your order, and can renew the link directly. Their contact details are on the shop's FAQ or contact page.
