From Watermarked SmugMug Photo to Clean Keepsake
SmugMug photographers can use their own text or image watermark and choose its position and transparency. Drag the slider to see how the AI rebuilds the photo underneath.

How to Remove a SmugMug Watermark
Try the official file first
Check your SmugMug order email for download links, or use the download icon in the gallery if your photographer has turned it on. If neither is there, ask your photographer.
Upload a photo you have the rights to
Drop the file into the tool above. The AI detects the logo or text and rebuilds the skin, hair, and background beneath it.
Compare and download
Check the details side by side, then download your clean photo at the size you uploaded.

Most SmugMug Watermarks Aren't on the File You Buy
SmugMug applies gallery watermarks to display copies, not to originals, and says watermarks won't appear on images customers purchase. So the logo you see while browsing may not be on your download. Check the file from your order email before you edit anything, because a clean original from your photographer is always the best version.

When the Mark Is Part of the File
Two kinds of marks can stay on a downloaded photo. A printmark is a logo, date, or signature a photographer deliberately adds to finished products. A mark added in editing software before upload is part of the image itself. If you own the photo or your photographer has cleared you to edit it, this tool can help with these marks when the photographer can't send a clean copy.

Built for Text and Logo Overlays
Because each photographer designs their own mark, SmugMug galleries can show anything from a faint corner signature to a large studio name. The tool is designed to detect these overlays automatically, with no brush work on your part. Results vary, so compare eyes, hair, and fine patterns before you download.

Your purchased copy still has a mark
You have permission to edit a photo, but the file you received still shows a logo or studio name and your photographer can't replace it.
The photographer can't be reached
A studio has closed or stopped replying, and all you have is a marked copy of a photo you own or are allowed to edit.
Printing a family or event photo
Prepare a photo you have the rights to for frames, albums, and gifts without a logo in the middle of the shot.
Photographers recovering their own work

Which Mark Is on Your SmugMug Photo?
The right next step depends on the type of mark you're looking at, and the download you chose can make a difference too.
A watermark you only see in the gallery
This is on the display copy. SmugMug doesn't watermark originals, so check the file from your order email or the gallery's download option before doing anything else.
A small logo, date, or signature on a purchased file
This may be a printmark, which SmugMug says shows up on the final product. Printmarked downloads are a separate product, so check your order. If you need an unmarked copy, ask your photographer.
A mark built into the file
If a photographer added a logo in editing software before uploading, SmugMug's watermark settings can't take it off. Only your photographer can replace that file with a clean export.
Download link that no longer works
A gallery download link requested as a visitor expires after two weeks, but you can request a fresh one from the gallery. Links for purchases arrive in your order email, so search your inbox first.
Choose the right download size
SmugMug sellers can offer sizes from about 640 × 480 pixels up to the original. Larger sizes only appear when the photo is big enough, so pick the largest size you're offered if you plan to print.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove a SmugMug watermark from my photos?
Yes, if you own the photo or your photographer has given you permission to edit it. Upload the image and the AI removes the mark, usually in about a minute. If you haven't purchased the photo yet, please order it from your photographer's SmugMug gallery. That's how they get paid for their work.
Do SmugMug digital downloads include the watermark?
Normally, no. SmugMug says a photographer's watermarks won't appear on images customers purchase, and originals aren't watermarked. The exceptions are printmarked downloads, which intentionally include a mark, and any mark added to the photo before it was uploaded. If your file has a mark you didn't expect, ask your photographer about it first.
What does a printmarked download mean?
It's a digital file that includes the printmark set for that gallery, such as a logo, date, or signature. Unlike a watermark, SmugMug says a printmark shows up on the final delivered product. Photographers sell these as a separate download option, so check your order and ask your photographer whether an unmarked version is available.
Where is my SmugMug download link?
If you bought digital files, SmugMug sends download links in your order email. If you bought at least four photos, you can also get them together in a ZIP file. For free gallery downloads, you verify your email in the gallery and receive a link there. It expires after two weeks, but you can request a new one.
Why can't I download photos from my SmugMug gallery?
Your photographer controls this with a gallery setting called Allow Downloads, and it's off by default on new Portfolio and Pro galleries. They can also require a download password or sell files instead of offering them free. Ask what your package includes. The Download All button only appears when a gallery has three or more items.
Do I need permission to remove a watermark from SmugMug photos?
Yes. You need to own the photo or have your photographer's permission. Buying a download doesn't automatically give you editing rights: SmugMug's personal license covers downloading and copying, and the photographer keeps ownership. If you're not sure what your purchase covers, ask them. If you just want a proof without paying, please buy it from your photographer.
Is this tool part of SmugMug?
No. We're an independent tool and aren't affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by SmugMug. We never connect to your SmugMug account or gallery, and we can't unlock a password-protected gallery. You only upload the files you choose. For questions about an order or download, contact your photographer, who manages the gallery and its settings.
What happens to the photos I upload?
Photos are stored encrypted and deleted automatically within 24 hours, including the cleaned result. We don't use your photos to train AI models, and we never sell or share them. Because many of the photos we see are of kids, we keep only what we need to deliver your result.
